Saturday, June 13th, 2009: 2nd Annual Astoria Knit in Public Day!

Astoria Knit in Public Day!

Hosted by: Rosemary of Astoria Crafty Knitty (ACK) &
Kim of Steinway Astoria Craft Crochet & Knit (SACK)
Location: Astoria Park, in side the park near 23rd Ave & 19th St
Time: 12pm-4pm
Date: June 13, 2009

How to get there:
Take the N train to the Ditmars Blvd stop. You will exit the train onto 31st St. Walk north to Ditmars Blvd, and head towards the river by turning left at the Starbucks.

If you want to walk to Astoria Park, just walk down Ditmars Blvd until you hit the park. It's approximately a 10 block walk. It's a nice walk, so stop by the Waltz for a refreshing drink to go!

If you want to take a bus, the Q19a runs down Ditmars Blvd until 21st St. If you get off at Ditmars Blvd and 21st St, just walk to blocks over to join us in the park.
If you want to drive, a driver has provided the following directions to Astoria Park:
1: From BQE (I-278) stay left onto I-278 E toward TRIBORO BR (also called RFK Bridge). You will now be on the Grand Central Parkway extension.
2: Take EXIT 45 (first exit after merge) 31st St.
3: Stay on I-278 service road/Grand Central Parkway extension)
4: Stay STRAIGHT to go onto HOYT AVE N.
5: HOYT AVE N becomes 19TH ST.
6: End at 23rd Ave & 19th St

In the park, we will be at the side of Astoria Park closest to 23rd Ave and 19th Street. Turn left onto 19th Street and walk into the park at 23rd Ave. That's where all the knitters, spinners and crocheters are!

Please bring:
Yourself! and your knitting, spinning or crocheting projects you are working on. You may want to bring any finished objects you want to share, too! We are planning to have demos of different techniques throughout the day. There will be cameras there, so bring your cameras to capture the event if you'd like.

We will be in the park for a long time. Please feel free to bring items for your personal comfort like, blankets, umbrellas or chairs. You may also want to bring food and drinks with you as well. (There are free bathrooms available nearby-- Astoria Park has public bathrooms available in the little kid's playground and near the running track as well.)

Most importantly, bring your smile and fiber positivity with you!

The backup plan is:
Lefkos Pirgos Cafe (22-85 31st Street, on the corner of 23rd Ave. in Astoria. It is a few steps from the Ditmars Ave/Astoria stop on the N line.)

We will set up a way to notify you the morning of if we need to move to this space. Please watch the blog for details on what will happen if it rains!

Please email Astoria.KIP (at) gmail (dot) com if you have any questions!

COMING SOON...

Details for the 2009 ASTORIA KiP!

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

THANK YOU FOR A SUCCESSFUL KiP!

I wanted to update here and thank everyone that came out last weekend for the Astoria Park KiP. We had a blast! It was a little hot by the river, but a good 20 people from all over NYC and Long Island came.

The Show 'n' Tell was very interesting. Projects included crocheted socks with an afterthought heel, and a needlepointed original design started back in the 70s. The ladies from The City Quilter who joined us for the beginning and this event, I hope you enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed you!

Tamar and Leslie talk yarn.

Rosemary's class was a great success, and several people from ACK & SACK started working on recycled bag bags during the event. (Including me!)

Jenny watches Rosemary teach us how to make plactic bags into yarn.

In fact, a member of the crochet guild stopped by and Rosemary's pattern will be published in their newsletter very soon.

Watching intently to learn.

I hosted the Quiz, with questions designed by me and Rosemary, on Astoria, Knitting and Crochet. Rosemary judged it for us and Danielle and Leslie were team captains vying for 4 bags of yarn & other goodies. With all our questions completed, WE WERE TIED. Oh noes! After a quick conference between Rosemary and I a new tiebraker was created. The winners? Leslie's Team!

In between these fun events, we sat under our tree and crafted. It was a fun time, but as the thunder started and the rain sprinkled, we called the day at 4pm. We look forward to this event next year!

I will updating this post with pictures as I receive them from attendees, and maybe even from the Ridgewood Legder! (There will be an article in it this Thursday with photos.) If you attended and want to add your photos to our collection, please send them to astoria.kip (at) gmail (dot) com.
